MARSHFIELD – Two early goals by Marshfield set the tone and the Tigers used the momentum to shut out Wisconsin Rapids 4-1 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys soccer game Tuesday at Griese Park.
The Tigers avenge an early-season loss to Rapids, a game that ended 7-1 and was the most lopsided defeat this year for Marshfield.
Both teams are now 8-6-3 overall, with Marshfield moving to 4-4-1 in the conference. Rapids is 4-3-3 in the Valley, two points ahead of the Tigers for third place.
Luke McCann scored off an assist from Hunter McManus at the 15:54 mark, and just 1:20 later Klaus Friedli hit the back of the net to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
“It’s a nice comeback for us tonight, for sure,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “It’s Parent’s Night and I got all the kids in, and we played some pretty good ball at times. The start of the second half we played some good ball, probably for the first half of the half, then it got a little frantic at the end, but overall I’m really happy with the way we played.”
McManus added a pair of goals in the second half, both on assists from Friedli. The first was 6:28 into the half and the second came with just 25 seconds remaining in the game.
Jared Klein saved four shots in goal in the first half, and Matt Pahl finished off the shutout with eight saves in the second 45 minutes.
Both teams had 12 shots on goal in the game.
Marshfield’s next game is Thursday at Merrill.
