Stratford wrestling has four champions, nine state qualifiers at WIAA Division 3 sectional

SHAWANO – The Stratford wrestling team qualified nine to the state tournament after an impressive day at the WIAA Division 3 individual wrestling sectional on Saturday at Shawano High School.

Manny Drexler (106 pounds), Jeremy Schoenherr (138), Jake Drexler (145), and Trevor Dennee (170) won sectional titles for the Tigers, while five others finished second or third to earn spots at the 2018 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which will be Feb. 22-24 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

A.J. Schoenfuss (126), Derek Marten (132), and Dylan Schoenherr (220) finished second, and Max Schwabe (120) and Aiden Hoffman (195) were third for Stratford.

Manny Drexler (40-3), who finished second a year ago at state, won the 106-pound title match over Dane Klinger of Marathon, 8-3.

Drexler is one of six Tigers returning to the state tournament.

Also going back are three-time state champions Schoenfuss and Jeremy Schoenherr.

Schoenfuss (41-4) lost the 126-pound title match to Jordan Boldt of Bonduel 3-1, and won a wrestleback by medical forfeit to finish second.

Jeremy Schoenherr remained undefeated this season, moving to 33-0, after beating Sammy VanStraten of Shiocton by major decision, 17-6.

Jake Drexler and Hoffman both finished third a year ago, and Marten was fourth at the 2017 state meet.

Jake Drexler (43-2) won the 145-pound title match over Bryce Karban of Coleman with a pin in just 35 seconds.

Marten dropped the 132-pound championship to Justin Kempf of Weyauwega-Fremton, 6-2, and is 28-6 this season.

Hoffman (28-5) reached the 195-pound finals before losing to Colton Heil of Edgar by pin in 1:23 and he forfeited his second-place wrestleback match.

Dennee (38-5), a sophomore, will be making his first state appearance after beating Brock Handrick of Edgar 9-4 in the 170-pound final.

Dylan Schoenherr (45-3) lost in the semifinals before coming back to beat Jacob Zeitler of Coleman by pin in the third-place match and took a second-place wrestleback over Dakota Venzke of Athens, 6-1, to also reach his first state tournament.

Schwabe (38-9) also will be going to state for the first time. The sophomore won a 120-pound third-place match over Dylan Baird of Auburndale, 6-0, before losing a second-place wrestleback.

Baird, Auburndale’s lone sectional qualifier, finishes the season 27-15.

Division 3 preliminaries, for those who finished second or third at sectionals, will be on Thursday at 7 p.m. Sectional champions earn byes into the Division 3 quarterfinals, which are Friday at 11:15 a.m.
