MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys basketball team scored the game’s first eight points and never trailed, cruising to a 61-42 victory over Wausau East in a WIAA Division 2 boys basketball regional quarterfinal Tuesday night at Marshfield High School.

Marshfield needed overtime to top East (2-21) in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game earlier this season, but Tuesday’s game was decided early with the big run.

Reed Miller and Seth Anderson each scored four points as the Tigers began the game on an 8-0 run. East eventually cut it to 12-8 after a basket by Forrest Kronberger before Marshfield scored the next seven points, which included a 3-pointer from Anderson and a hoop by Grant Urban, to make it 19-8.

Marshfield closed the half on 15-2 run to open up a 19-point lead at the break.

“I thought our defense was way better tonight than it was at East,” Marshfield coach Scott Scheuer said. “I didn’t do a good job of how we defended the ball screens. They got shots and made shots. I’m happy with the way we took care of them before half and took a big lead.”

East scored the first five points of the second half, but Marshfield regrouped quickly.

Anderson hit a pair of 3-pointers and Issac Meverden added another and the Tigers’ lead was 23. They led by at least 16 the rest of the way.

Anderson finished with 19 points, Miller had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Meverden added 12 points for Marshfield.

Marshfield (11-11) will play a D-2 regional semifinal at Mosinee on Friday at 7 p.m. Mosinee beat Marshfield 73-71 on a last-second shot back on Feb. 6.

“They played zone, we shot well and had 12 3s, got up by 13 or 14, and then we let it get away, I let it get away,” Scheuer said. “I’m anxious to get back there with a full team. Grant Urban is back (after being out five games with an injury) and he gives us another dimension, a 6-4 athlete.”
