College roundup: Updates on Baierl, Donahue, Schultz, Schwecke

A number of former local high school athletes have moved on to the next level and are playing sports collegiately across the country.

Periodically, MarshfieldAreaSports.com will publish a College Sports Roundup updating readers of some of those local athletes’ exploits at the collegiate level.

Baierl finishes season at Franciscan

Abby Baierl, a 2016 graduate of Marshfield Columbus Catholic High School, recently finished up her junior season on the Franciscan University women’s basketball team.

Franciscan, a NCAA Division III school located in Steubenville, Ohio, finished the season with a 2-22 record and a 2-16 mark in the Allegheny Mountain Conference.

Baierl played in 20 games, starting 17, and averaged 29.1 minutes, 10.6 points, and six rebounds per game for the Barrons.

Baierl had 14 3-pointers, 46 assists, and 27 steals this season. She scored in double figures in each of Franciscan’s final five games, including a season-high 19 points against La Roche on Feb. 6.

Donahue kicks off college softball career
Megan Donahue, a 2018 Marshfield High School graduate, is a freshman on the Daytona State College softball team.

Daytona State College, a junior college in the Mid-Florida Conference of the Florida State College Activities Association, is located in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Through games on March 5, Donahue is batting .434 (23-for-56) with seven home runs, 23 RBIs, and 15 runs scored for DSC, which is 12-5.

Schultz plays at Marian
Schultz, a 2017 Columbus Catholic High School graduate, recently wrapped up his sophomore season on the Marian University men’s basketball team.

Marian, located in Fond du Lac, finished the season 7-18 overall and 5-15 in the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference.

Schultz played in 15 games, all off the bench, averaging 10 minutes and 2.9 points per game. He had nine 3-pointers and went 9-for-10 from the free throw line.

Schultz had a season-high 14 points, including three 3-pointers, against Aurora (Ill.) on Jan,. 15.

Schwecke continues baseball career
Trevor Schwecke, a 2016 graduate of Marshfield High School, is a junior on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team.

Schwecke, a three-year starting infielder, is off to a slow start this season. He has played in five of the Panthers’ nine games, going 3-for-23 at the plate with four RBIs.

Milwaukee is 6-3 this season heading into a four-game series starting Thursday at Brigham Young in Utah.
