NEW RICHMOND – Marshfield shot a 334 and finished fifth at the WIAA Division 1 boys golf sectional at New Richmond Golf Course on Wednesday.

Freshman Davis Rens shot a 78 to finish in a tie for eighth to lead the way for the Tigers, who won last week’s regional title at Antigo. Nate Boson had an 81, Ben Baur shot an 87, and Cole Hanson and Jaxon Bulgrin both had 88s for Marshfield.

The top two teams and top three individuals not on those teams qualify for the 2019 WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament at University Ridge Golf Club in Madison on June 3-4.

Hudson won the team title with a 316, four shots ahead of the other state qualifier, Eau Claire Memorial.

Rens was three shots short of the final individual qualifying spot. Owen Covey of New Richmond shot a one-under par 71 on his home course to claim the sectional title and a spot in Madison. Merrill’s Russell Dettmering, the Wisconsin Valley Conference individual champion, finished one stroke back, and Stevens Point senior Evan Thomas locked down the final individual spot with a 75 and a tie for fourth overall.
