MARATHON – The Stratford football team bounced back in a big way Friday from its first loss of the season a week ago, routing Marathon 48-20 in a Marawood Conference game at Marathon High School.
With the win, the Tigers remain undefeated in conference play at 4-0 and improve to 4-1 overall. Marathon, which beat Stratford 21-7 a year ago, drops to 3-2 overall and in conference play.
Stratford racked up an incredible 499 yards rushing, posting three individual 100-yard games. Jamie Aschebrock led the way with 137 yards and three touchdowns, quarterback Nick Viegut had 120 yards on just five carries and a touchdown, and Mark Marquardt chipped in 106 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries.
The Tigers averaged 10 yards a carry in the win.
Koleman Schilling was 13 of 19 for 185 yards and three touchdowns through the air for Marathon. Two of the scores went to Cody Hanke, who caught a 32-yard scoring strike with 6 seconds left in the first half to cut Stratford’s lead to 28-14.
However, on the final play of the half, Stratford struck again as Aschebrock broke free on a running play and ended up tossing the ball back to Viegut, who scampered into the end zone for another score and a 34-14 lead at the break.
Marquardt and Derek Austin added touchdowns in the second half as the Tigers won going away.
The Tigers win sets up a matchup between two of the three remaining unbeaten teams in the Marawood. Stratford hosts Chippewa Falls McDonell (5-0 overall and Marawood) on Friday at Tiger Stadium.
Edgar is the other unbeaten team in the conference at 4-0. The Wildcats play at winless Phillips on Oct. 1 before hosting Stratford on Oct. 8.
