MARSHFIELD – In a pair of games this week, the Marshfield Chaparrals amateur baseball team something that they hadn’t done all season.

They didn’t hit.

After getting 57 hits in their first four games and running up a 3-1 record in the Dairyland League, the Chap’s bats fell silent Monday at Plover in a 4-2 loss and again on Tuesday when they were blanked 6-0 at Jack Hackman Field in Marshfield against the Eau Claire Cavaliers.

The Chaps got just four hits Monday against the Pterodactyls, with Nate McDonald getting two of them, including a triple. He also scored both runs in the loss.

Starting pitcher Bobby Pilz may have deserved a better fate, unfortunately, he was also his own worst enemy. In the sixth inning he walked two batters, hit a third and then gave up his only runs of the night when he surrendered a grand slam home run.

The Chaps went quietly in the seventh and drove home with their second loss of the season.

On Tuesday, Marshfield’s recent malady only deepened when they garnered a single hit off the bat of Kyle Westhuis on their second at bat of the night.

Again, the pitching was strong with Connor Jasurda toeing the rubber for 6 2/3 innings.

But with no run support and the Chaps committing five infield errors, Jasurda was living on borrowed time.

The Cavs scored two runs in the fourth, one of which was unearned, and three more in the seventh, including another unearned run ending Jasurda’s night. Kade Lancour finished for the Chaps going 2 2/3 innings, striking out three, but yielding a homer to winning pitcher Ryan Venne in the ninth.

The Chaparrals play at Everest at 7 p.m. Monday and hosts Waupaca at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
