MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team wrapped up a busy first week of the season by splitting a pair of games on Thursday and Friday.

Marshfield blanked River Falls 2-0 on Thursday at Griese Park, then played the first varsity event at the new Ken and Ardyce Heiting Stadium at Marshfield High School on Friday, losing 3-2 to New Richmond.

The Tigers went 1-1-1 in their first week, having tied Holmen on Tuesday.

After a scoreless first half Thursday, the Tigers went ahead for good when Kyle Tremelling scored on a penalty kick 4:38 into the second half.

Brian Fay added an insurance goal, off an assist by Ian Haugen, in the 81st minute for the Tigers.

Trevor Cassidy saved seven shots for Marshfield.

Each team traded goals in the first half as the game was tied 2-2 going into halftime.

New Richmond scored on a Marshfield own goal just 2:15 into the game, but Marshfield tied its quickly as Sam Roherty scored his first goal of the season at the 8:25 mark.

After Caleb Armstrong put New Richmond (3-1) on top again, Spencer Frey scored for the Tigers with 3:43 left behind halftime to knot the score at 2-2.

The score remained tied until Andrew Johnson got one past Cassidy with just 1:05 remaining, giving New Richmond the victory.

“It was a beautiful night for a game in the Ken and Ardyce Heiting Stadium,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “The team showed good resilience in fighting back to tie the game two times. It was unfortunate that we controlled their outstanding forward, Andrew Johnson, who has been a star forward for New Richmond the last four years, until the final minute of game when he scored the go-ahead goal.”

Marshfield now turns to Wisconsin Valley Conference play. The Tigers will host Stevens Point on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Heiting Community Stadium before playing its first road game of the 2019 campaign at Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday night.

“Overall, I’m really pleased by the talent this team has and how well the team is playing this early,” McCann said. “We need to fix a few small things and prepare for the start of the Wisconsin Valley Conference games with Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids next week.”
