Stratford 2nd, Spencer 3rd at Stratford volleyball tournament

STRATFORD – Stratford finished second and Spencer third on Saturday at the Stratford Invitational volleyball tournament at Stratford High School.

Spencer went 2-2, beating Tigerton 25-19, 25-20, and Rosholt 23-25, 25-17, 15-7, and losing to Athens 25-19, 27-25 and Mosinee 17-25, 25-21, 15-8.

Courtney Schulz had 31 kills, five service aces and seven blocks, and Tara Matter and Nicki Bruss each added 12 kills for Spencer. Setter Kyleigh Hebert had 44 assists and Kyle Esser added 38. Dani Johnson led the defense with 48 digs and also had five aces.

“Our pool (with Mosinee, Athens and Tigerton) was extremely tough competition,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “We played up and down all day, but we will bring a lot of things to improve on out of the day.”

Athens went 4-0 to win the event, beating host Stratford in the championship match.

No statistics were provided for Stratford.

Spencer plays at Granton on Monday and home against Gilman on Tuesday in a pair of Cloverbelt Conference matches.

Stratford plays at Wausau Newman on Tuesday.
