AUBURNDALE – Auburndale came back from an early eight-point deficit to take the lead, but couldn’t do it again in the second half.

Up by one with 3:30 to go, Edgar finished the game on an 8-4 run to close out a 52-47 victory over the Apaches in a Marawood Conference South Division boys basketball game Tuesday night at Auburndale High School.

The loss ends Auburndale’s six-game winning streak and hands the Apaches just their second loss of the season, dropping them to 15-2 overall and 10-2 in the Marawood South. Edgar is now 12-3 overall and 8-3 in conference play.

Edgar jumped out to a 14-6 lead following a 3-pointer from Austin Dahlke with 10:20 to go in the first half.

Auburndale, which missed its first five 3-point attempts, suddenly heated up. Fletcher Raab and Schuyler Gilhuasen each made a pair of 3-pointers to spark a 12-3 run that gave the Apaches their first lead at 21-20 with just more than 5 minutes left in the half.

A 3-pointer by Kyle Brewster for Edgar, following by a buzzer-beating lay-in from Cooper Weinfurter for Auburndale sent the game to halftime tied 28-28.

Four times Edgar scored to take the lead, only to see Auburndale respond and tie it again.

Dahlke scored off a rebound, Drew Guden hit a jumper, and Dahlke drilled a 3-pointer to give Edgar a 44-37 lead with seven minutes left. The Wildcats never trailed again.

Weinfurter and Gilhausen both hit 3-pointers to bring Auburndale to within one at 44-43 with 3:35 left, but the Apaches wouldn’t score again for more than two minutes and Edgar was able to create some distance.

Kaleb Hafferman scored following Gilhausen’s 3-pointer and Dahlke added a hoop with 1:23 to go to push Edgar’s lead back to five.

After Hunter Wright made one of two free throws for Auburndale, Edgar made four of five at the line to go back up by eight after the Apaches turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions. Weinfurter hit a 3-pointer with 5.5 seconds left to provide the final score.

Guden had a team-high 15 points, Dahlke had 13 points and eight rebounds, Brewster added 12 points, and Hafferman chipped in 10 points for Edgar.

Raab led Auburndale with 17 points.

Both teams will host Marawood crossover games on Friday. Edgar is at home against Phillips and Auburndale will be back at home to take on Prentice.
