Schoenfuss ends sophomore year for UWO wrestling

A.J. Schoenfuss, a 2018 graduate of Stratford High School, finished his sophomore season for the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team at the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional on Feb. 28-29 in Minneapolis.

Schoenfuss went 1-2 with a pin at the regional tournament as Oshkosh finished 11th in the team standings.

Schoenfuss, a three-time WIAA Division 3 individual state champion at Stratford, ended the year with a 16-17 record at 133 pounds, that included eight pins. He was 24-11 at 125 pounds as a freshman.

Schwanebeck-Ostermann heading to nationals

Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann

Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann, a 2019 graduate of Marshfield High School, is a sophomore on the Augsburg (Minn.) University wrestling team that has eight wrestlers headed to the NCAA Division III national tournament at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 13-14.

Schwanebeck-Ostermann is 20-9 this season with three major decisions, two technical falls and six pins. He competed in seven tournaments this season at 174 pounds, winning the individual title at the Auggie-Adidas Invitational on Nov. 23, placing second at the NUWAY College Open on Jan. 10, and taking third at the North Central Invitational on Dec. 7 and the Winona State Invite on Feb. 15.

Augsburg has won 18-straight Division III regional titles.

Mitch Hertel

Mitch Hertel qualifies for national wrestling tournament

Mitch Hertel, a 2015 Marshfield High School graduate and a senior on the UW-La Crosse wrestling team, won the 165-pound title at the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest regional on Feb. 28-29 to secure a spot in this week’s national tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Hertel (18-3) defeated Ryder Sigler of UW-Whitewater 3-1 in the 165-pound championship match at the regional to earn his first trip to the Division III championships.

The national tournament will be held March 14-15.

Sam Mitchell

Mitchell competes for Buffalo wrestling

Sam Mitchell, a 2019 Marshfield High School graduate, completed his freshman season on the University of Buffalo wrestling team.

Buffalo, which competes in the NCAA Division I Midwestern Athletic Conference, finished the season with a 9-11 dual meet record.

Mitchell went 8-5 in limited action at 197 pounds for the Bulls.
