Spencer/Columbus football drops postseason game at Cumberland

CUMBERLAND – For the second week in a row, the Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team took on an undefeated team, but this time the Rockets couldn’t pull off the upset.

A week after beating unbeaten Amherst, Spencer/Columbus was overwhelmed by undefeated Cumberland, losing 42-8 in a WIAA Division 4 postseason contest on Friday night at Cumberland High School.

The Beavers scored two touchdowns in the first three minutes and rolled out to a 34-0 lead by halftime.

Spencer/Columbus’ touchdown came with 2:33 left in the game from running back Eden Jacobson, who was held to 24 yards rushing on 15 attempts.

Cumberland quarterback Maddux Allen and the Beavers’ passing game proved unstoppable.

Allen was 12-for-16 for 289 yards and five touchdowns. Allen hit Travis Runberg for a 65-yard touchdown on the opening play of the game, threw a 37-yard score to Jack Martens on the Beavers;’ next possession, and added TDs of 28 and 13 yards to DeShaun Ames, and 27 yards to Martens, all before halftime.

Cumberland (8-0) moves on to a Level 2 postseason game against Stanley-Boyd. Spencer/Columbus has its season end with a 5-3 record.
