MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Chaparrals amateur baseball team got back to Dairyland League baseball Saturday afternoon after almost a week off with a doubleheader against the Whittlesey Reds.

And while the Chaps split with their rivals from up north, they cashed in on the money game winning the nine-inning opener 6-2 in conference action, while dropping the non-league nightcap 7-1.

The Reds opened the scoring in the first with a lead-off double and later scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

But that lead didn’t last as Nathan Krommenaker walked to open the Chaps’ first. His brother Caleb moved him to second with a single and Luke Wirtz continued his sizzling hot summer with an RBI single, the first of four singles on the day as Wirtz went 4-for-4 with a walk.

The Chaps took the lead for good in the fourth when Isaiah Bairel knocked in Jake Earll, who had led off with an infield single, to make it 2-1.

Marshfield starter Bobby Pilz was dialed in, coaxing one fly ball after another as his defense worked behind him. Pilz chalked up his second win of the season against one loss. It also marked his 17th win as a Chaparrals’ hurler midway through his fourth full season. Pilz yielded just four hits in his five innings of work, surrendering one run with three strikeouts and two bases on balls.

The Chaps’ hurlers got more run support in the fifth when Earl scored again after a single when Nathan Krommenakker knocked him in.

Caleb Krommenakker took over for Pilz and gave up a harmless run in the eighth.

Wirtz scored on a fielder’s choice ground ball by Riley Boushak in the sixth and the Chaparrals added two more in the eighth on an RBI bases on balls by Will Lee and a sacrifice fly by Earl to end the scoring and make the final 6-2.

The Chaps weren’t so fortunate in game two dropping the nightcap 7-1.

Isaiah Bairel had the only two hits for the Chaps, one to lead off the game and the other in the seventh.

Hunter Korger was saddled with the loss and Nick Retterath earned the win for the Reds.

Marshfield will play at Everest on Tuesday, and will host Pittsville at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Jack Hackman Field. The games will be live at zaleskisports.com
