MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield volleyball team defeated Stratford 3-0 in its home opener on Tuesday in front of a boisterous crowd at the Boson Company Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.

Marshfield won 25-16, 25-22, 25-19, to improve to 10-4 overall this season.

Marshfield took quick control of the first set, jumping out to an 11-4 lead as Abby Ongna had a pair of kills.

Stratford closed to within 14-10 on kills from Ally Zuleger and Jaidyn Wright, before Marshfield pulled away again.

Rylee Corteen and Ongna each had two kills as Marshfield closed the set on an 11-6 run, clinching the 25-16 win on a service ace by Elise Uphoff.

The second set was tighter with Stratford leading 18-16 following two kills by Hailey Chapel and a couple of Marshfield errors.

Marshfield was able to regroup and Pernsteiner had a pair of kills late to help finish off a 25-22 win.

Marshfield survived a late rally by Stratford in the third set to eventually finish off the sweep with a 25-19 win.

Ongna had 10 kills, Pernsteiner nine and Casey Frankland seven to lead Marshfield. Uphoff had 13 digs and five aces, and setter Reinya Balderson had 29 assists for Marshfield.

Zuleger had six kills, and Chapel and Megan Wiese each added five for Stratford. Zuleger had 12 assists and Chapel added 10, and Kylee Manecke and Kalyn Schueller each had four digs as well.

Marshfield will open its Wisconsin Valley Conference schedule with a match at D.C. Everest on Thursday before hosting its annual tournament with Antigo, Ashwaubenon, Ladysmith, Abbotsford and Ripon coming to the Boson Company Fieldhouse on Saturday.

Stratford hosts Pittsville in its home opener on Thursday in a nonconference match before opening its Marawood Conference South Division schedule Sept. 7 at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption.
