WEYAUWEGA – The Spencer/Columbus Catholic running game eventually outdid the Weyauwega-Fremont passing attack and the Rockets pulled out a 48-28 win in a Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division football game Friday night at Weyauwega-Fremont High School.

Spencer/Columbus, which had been shutout the past two weeks, ran for 369 yards and scored three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory and improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the CWC Large.

Spencer/Columbus led 21-7 after halftime as Will Gorst had an 8-yard touchdown run, Xane Adler caught a 23-yard TD pass from Cole Timmler, and Brock Bennington scored from the 2.

Weyauwega-Fremont, behind the arm of quarterback Hunter Meisenhelder, mounted a comeback.

Meisenhelder threw his second touchdown of the game, 25 yards to Kameron Zielke, and ran in from the 6 to tie the game.

After Adler hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Timmler to give the Rockets a 27-21 lead, Meisenhelder connected with Brayden Arndt on a 65-yard scoring pass and the Warhawks made the extra point to grab a 28-27 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Spencer/Columbus’ defense responded, shutting out the Warhawks the rest of the way, and the Rockets’ pounding running game took over.

Gorst scored from the 3, Timmler ran in from the 10, and Bennington scored his second TD from the 2 as Spencer/Columbus pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Gorst finished with 216 yards rushing and Bennington added 113 for the Rockets.

Meisenhelder was on fire for the Warhawks (0-4, 0-2 CWC Large), going 23-for-39 for 366 yards, but was intercepted twice by Timmler and Bennington. Arndt caught 12 of those passes for 251 yards and two scores in the loss.

“We are really proud of our guys’ effort,” SC coach Jason Gorst said. “They had their best week of practice yet. Will Gorst had a breakout week.”

Spencer/Columbus will host undefeated Amherst next Friday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. at Spencer High School. The game will be live at zaleskisports.com.
