Stratford boys, girls both finish second at home cross country invitational

STRATFORD – Both Stratford teams finished second at its home Stratford Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday at Tiger Stadium.

Rhinelander won the boys team title with 53 points. Stratford was second with 70 and Athens third with 73.

Mosinee took the girls team title with 33 points, just four ahead of Stratford. Rhinelander was third with 51.

Callahan Laggis of Rhinelander won the boys race in 17:53.46, 39 seconds ahead of Mosinee’s Cooper Szekeress (18:32.48). Nathan Wolf (18:44.70) and Andrew Schaer (18:50.00) of Athens finished fourth and fifth.

Stratford’s top runner was Cree Defoe, who took sixth in 18:58.78. teammates Ethan Heeg (ninth, 19:15.41), Lance Krieg (11th, 19:22.89) and Brett Bangart (13th, 19:39.41) added top-15 finishes for the Tigers.

Sophia Miljevich of Rhinelander won the girls race by 14 seconds over Mosinee’s Kate Fitzgerald. Britt Fitzgerald was a close third for Mosinee, finishing 1.01 seconds behind.

Stratford’s Kayla Casperson took fourth (22:07.42), Breleigh Skaya was sixth (22:16.83), Ella Heidmann seventh (22:23.51) and Sarah Zuelke ninth (22:44.43) as the Tigers nearly pulled off the win.

Mosinee had two other top-10 finishes with Sydney Leszczynski finishing fifth in 22:13.64 and Jena Bartnik 10th in 22:47.06.
