MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys basketball celebrated its seven seniors and finished off an undefeated Wisconsin Valley Conference championship season with a 62-53 win over Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday night at the Chips Hamburgers Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.

The Tigers started five seniors, two whom don’t normally see rotation minutes, and had all 13 available players see action in the first half of the game.

Gavin Fravert scored six of his 11 points in the opening eight minutes as Marshfield took a 13-8 lead and never trailed again.

Marcus Neve had six straight points for the Tigers, Brooks Hinson added five points, and Trevor Foemmel had a steal and layup at the buzzer as Marshfield closed the half on a 17-9 run and led 32-19 at halftime.

Wisconsin Rapids came as close as seven at 40-33 after a three-point play by Cade Jungwirth, but Marshfield responded with a 14-5 run to regain control and were able to close out the victory, improving to 18-4 overall and ending its WVC schedule a perfect 12-0.

“I don’t think when the season starts your goal is not to go perfect, your goal is one game at a time and you try to win every game that you play,” Marshfield coach Chris Fischer said. “At the beginning of the year, you have goals and you set the bar high. I would take these guys up against anybody. They are a great group of guys.”

Chase Hinson had 13 points and Neve finished with 12 for Marshfield.

Jabari Anderson hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points for Wisconsin Rapids (4-19, 1-11 WVC). Jungwirth added 11 points in the loss.

Both teams will open WIAA postseason play next Friday, March 4, with Division 1 regional semifinals. Wisconsin Rapids will be at Eau Claire Memorial and Marshfield will host D.C. Everest. The Marshfield game will be broadcast live at zaleskisports.com.
