Late basket lifts Fall Creek over Columbus Catholic in Cloverbelt boys basketball crossover

NEILLSVILLE – Bo Vollarth scored with 10 seconds to go to lift Fall Creek to an 86-85 win over Marshfield Columbus Catholic in the first-place game of the Cloverbelt Conference crossovers on Saturday afternoon at Neillsville High School.

Columbus Catholic rolled out to a 52-36 lead at halftime before the Crickets whittled away at the deficit in the second half.

Fall Creek pulled ahead 77-76 with four minutes left and led until Columbus Catholic’s Emmitt Konieczny scored on a drive to the basket with 28 seconds left to put the Dons up 85-84.

After Vollrath’s basket, Columbus advanced the ball just past halfcourt and called timeout with 4.7 seconds left. Sam Wilczek drove down the lane but was long on a runner to the hoop and Fall Creek held on for the victory.

Konieczny scored 26 points, Blake Jakobi added 18, Charlie Moore had 15, and Cole Noreen 13 for the Dons, who finish the regular season with a 20-4 record.

Soren Johnson had 23 points, Ben Kelly added 20 and Vollrath finished with 19 for Fall Creek (20-4).

Columbus Catholic will host a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal against Tigerton on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live at zaleskisports.com.
