MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 nonconference win over Tomah on Saturday at rainy and cold Heiting Community Stadium.

Lauren Homolka scored midway through the first half for Marshfield and the 1-0 lead held into halftime.

Avery Weister jump-started the second half with a goal 16 seconds into play, and Grace Taylor added a goal 15 minutes later to push Marshfield’s lead to 3-0.

Tomah added a goal late to avoid the shutout.

Presley Franklin had two assists and Abby Ongna assisted on Taylor’s score for the Tigers (5-5).

“That start (to the second half) was so nice to see and the girls connecting two super diagonal passes perfectly followed up by a great shot by Avery was the boost the offense needed,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “We have been waiting for Avery to get the production to reflect her efforts and today she did that. She knows and has been working so hard with her shot that today it paid off for her.”

Ella Allar had nine saves in goal for Marshfield.

“Ella played a pretty solid game in goal despite some tough conditions for a goalie,” Lindner said. “She came out as necessary and stopped some decent shots from Tomah. Between Ella and Payton Bremer, the two freshmen goalies have played nice games since starting goalie and captain Ava Sainterme went down with an injury.”

The Marshfield Tiger soccer program honored the people instrumental in starting soccer at Marshfield during halftime.

The boys coaches from the first team in 1988, Lee Nafziger, Scotty Berg, and John Weiman, along with players and recruitment directors at the time Melanie Peterson-Nafziger and Brian Olson, and the first girls coach in 1992, Dr. Laurel Rudolph-Kniech, were honored.

Marshfield will host Stevens Point for a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Tuesday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live at zaleskisports.com.
