MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield softball team suffered its first Wisconsin Valley Conference loss but responded with a victory in a split doubleheader on Friday at Madison Field.

Wisconsin Rapids pitcher Rhiannon Carroll tossed a three-hitter as the Raiders upended Marshfield 8-1 to halt the Tigers’ celebration of an outright Wisconsin Valley Conference title.

The Tigers came back with a 6-2 nonconference win over Mosinee.

Marshfield led 1-0 after a first-inning run against Carroll, but that would be all the right-hander would allow as Wisconsin Rapids pulled ahead late and blew it open with a five-run seventh inning.

Marshfield had an uncharacteristic five errors in the loss as it falls to 9-1 in the conference. The Tigers have already secured no worse than a tie for the WVC championship, but will now need a win at home over D.C. Everest on Tuesday or at Wausau West on Thursday.

Megan Clary had two hits and two RBI, and Emily Friday had two hits and scored twice for Wisconsin Rapids (14-5, 7-4 Wisconsin Valley Conference). The Raiders will finish their conference season at home against Wausau West on Tuesday.

Sandra Costa held Mosinee to just five hits to pick up the win in the Tigers’ second game, and also had two hits and an RBI.

Courtney Donahue and Loryn Jakobi also had two hits and an RBI each in the win for Marshfield.

Maria Valls Raya had a single, a triple and knocked in one of Mosinee’s runs. The Indians falls to 14-3.

Mosinee needs a win at Tomahawk on Monday to earn a tie for the Great Northern Conference title.
