COLBY – The Auburndale football team locked down its first conference championship in 20 years on Friday night at Colby High School with a 20-14 win over Colby, ending the defending WIAA Division 5 state champions’ 22-game winning streak.

Auburndale, ranked ninth in this week’s Wissports.net Division 6 state coaches poll, finishes the regular season 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the Marawood Conference. The Eagles share the conference title with Colby and Edgar, the first time Auburndale has won a Marawood championship since sharing the title with Stratford in 2002.

After Colby tied the game at 14-14 on a 5-yard touchdown run by Tevin Rue, Auburndale responded with what proved to be the game-winning score as quarterback Trayton Weber connected with Alex Willfahrt for a 30-yard touchdown with 5:02 remaining.

The Eagles’ defense was able to hold to secure the victory after a stellar performance, finishing with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Colby, the fifth-ranked team in the Division 5 state poll, scored first on a 5-yard touchdown run by Caden Healy midway through the second quarter, before Auburndale came back to tie it on a 1-yard TD run by Kaden Anderson and the teams heading to halftime with a 7-7 score.

The Eagles took the lead on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Weber to Willfahrt with 5:13 left in the third quarter and the score held until Rue’s score with 7:29 to go in the fourth.

Weber finished 12-for-22 for 199 yards and the two scores to Willfahrt, who totaled 101 yards on three catches. Tim Schmitt led the Eagles’ with five catches for 49 yards. Weber also had a team-high 52 yard rushing in the win.

Both teams head into the postseason next week. The WIAA will announced its playoff brackets with a special reveal show on Bally Sports Wisconsin at 10 a.m. Saturday.
