WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys soccer team outscored Wausau East 5-3 in a shootout to win its WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal match Tuesday at East High School.

Marshfield scored two first-half goals – by Mathew Uphoff on a Maahir Patel assist at the 9:07 mark and by Michele Piffei at the 22:13 mark before East stormed back in the second half, using the wind to its advantage.

A red card had the Tigers playing a man down for the final 18 minutes and East (4-14) was able to tie the game on goals from Kayden Kelly and Donovan Young.

Marshfield navigated through overtime with goalkeeper Zak Meyer and the Tigers’ defense holding.

Brett Mannigel, Uphoff, Payton Schreiner and Patel scored in the shootout for Marshfield, and East matched until the fourth attempt, which sailed high. Julian Clopton then knocked in the clincher for the Tigers.

Marshfield (5-11-2), the No. 5 seed in the regional bracket, moves on to a D-2 regional final at No. 1 seed Pulaski on Saturday at 7 p.m. Pulaski (16-4-1) routed Green Bay West 12-0 on Tuesday.
