Marshfield’s Scharenbroch finishes second at WIAA Division 1 cross country meet, moves on to state

STEVENS POINT – Marshfield freshman Natalie Scharenbroch qualified for her first state meet after placing second in the girls race at the WIAA Division 1 cross country sectional Saturday at Standing Rock Park.

D.C. Everest’s Sara Mlodik won the girls race in 18:28.5, with Scharenbroch second in 20:03.8 as both earned two of the five individual berths up for grabs at the sectional.

The top two teams and top five individuals not on those teams move on to the 2022 WIAA State Cross Country Championships, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Neenah won the girls team title with 70 points and Appleton North was second with 87 to earn the two team berths.

Stevens Point’s Sarah Hopp (fourth, 20:11.3), D.C. Everest’s Maria Selting (fifth, 20:27.6) and Wausau West’s Elexa Marciniak (seventh, 20;30.0) earned the other three individual girls spots.

Stevens Point rolled to the boys team title with 18 points as all seven of its runners finished in the top nine, led by individual champion Bode Erickson (15:57.7).

Neenah finished second with 61 and Marshfield was a distant 11th with 253.

Marshfield’s top runner was Thomas Cashmer, who took 22nd in 18:05.3.
