HAYWARD – Marshfield won five individual titles and had 11 top-four finshes to earn the team title at the WIAA Division 1 wrestling regional at Hayward High School on Saturday.
With the team win, the Tigers advance to the Division 1 team sectional at Eau Claire North and will take on West Salem/Bangor in a semifinal dual at 6 p.m. Menomonie and Holmen will battle in the other semifinal, with the winners facing each other for a berth in the WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament.
Also, 11 Tigers moves on to the D-1 individual sectional, which will be held next Saturday, Feb. 18, at Eau Claire North. The top two in each weight class qualify for the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament in Madison on Feb. 23-25.
Brett Franklin (138 pounds), Hoyt Blaskowski (145), Caleb Dennee (152), Garrett Willuweit (160), and Owen Griesbach (170) all won individual championships for Marshfield, which finished with 239 points. Menomonie was second with 206.5 points.
Franklin (37-8) won the 138-pound title match over Connor Krueger of Superior, 5-0, to start a run of five-straight weight classes won by the Tigers.
Blaskowski (41-3) followed with a pin in 35 seconds over Jason Thomas of Superior in the 145-pound championship, and three more Marshfield wrestlers followed with pins.
Dennee (37-5) pinned Jacob Range of River Falls in 1:50 at 152 pounds, Willuweit (41-6) earned a pin in 1:34 over Steele Schaefer of Menomonie at 160, and Griesbach (33-5) pinned Dawson Clymer of Hudson in 1:40 at 170.
Jon Sternweis (34-11 at 106), Easton Ledden (27-16 at 120), Mason Seidl (21-16 at 182) and Adrian Kruger (32-17 at 285) all finished second, with James Clements (16-7) taking third at 220 and Eli Colby (8-6) earned a fourth-place finish at 195 to also move on to sectionals for Marshfield.
