CADOTT – The Stratford wrestling team is heading back to the team state tournament after sweeping two matches at the WIAA Division 1 team sectional Tuesday night at Cadott High School.

The Tigers dominated Clear Lake 53-18 in the semifinals and rolled past Glenwood City 42-28 in the championship match to earn a spot at the 2023 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse in Madison on March 4.

The team state appearance will be Stratford’s first since a run of five in a row from 2016-20 that included two Division 3 championships.

In the championship match, Glenwood City led 16-9 after six matches before Stratford ripped off six-straight wins to finish off the victory.

Ryan Becker (152 pounds) and Jack Tubbs (160) earned pins, Kaleb Krummel scrapped out a 6-4 decision at 170, and Carter Lueck (182), Alex Mueller (195) and Jackson Ormond (220) followed with first-period pins as the Tigers pulled ahead. Stratford forfeited the final two matches after the match was out of reach.

The semifinal against Clear Lake was never in doubt as Stratford won the first four matches, two on pins by Colin Cournoyer (113) and Trenton Cournoyer (120), and another on a forfeit as it led 22-0.

After Clear Lake won three-straight matches by pin, Stratford closed out the win with five victories in a row, including a pin from Krummel and a technical fall victory by Becker.

Stratford will be sending 10 athletes to the WIAA Division 3 individual sectional on Saturday at Edgar. The top three finishers in each weight class qualify for the 2023 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 23-25.
