EAU CLAIRE – The Marshfield wrestling team is sending nine athletes to the state tournament after winning seven championships and earning two runner-up finishes at the WIAA Division 1 individual sectional Saturday at Eau Clarie North High School.
The 2023 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament will be held Feb. 23-25 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Ava Gardner, the lone Marshfield female in the girls tournament, won her 100-pound championship match over Nora Lee of Holmen with a 13-2 major decision to advance to the girls portion of the state tournament.
On the boys side, senior Hoyt Blaskowski (46-3) will be making his fourth-straight trip to state after winning the 145-pound championship with a pin of Gavin Finch of Tomah in 5:35.
Seniors Brett Franklin and Garrett Willuweit, and sophomore Caleb Dennee will be returning to state for the second year in a row after also winnng sectional titles for the Tigers.
Franklin (42-8) won the 138-pound title with a first-period pin of Connor Krueger of Superior; Willuweit (46-6) captured the 160-pound championship with a pin in 1:49 of Holmen’s Benson Swatek; and Dennee (42-5) won by technical fall 15-0 over Matt McBride of Holmen in the 152-pound final.
Sophomore Owen Griesbach and senior Adrian Kruger also won championships for Marshfield. Griesbach (38-5) defeated Andy Johnson of West Salem/Bangor 7-5 to win the 170-pound championship, and Kruger (37-17) won the 285-pound title match with a 4-1 win over River Falls’ Lincoln McCarty.
Freshman Jon Sternweis (39-12) finished second at 106 pounds and James Clements (19-9) was second at 220 to also earn state tournament spots for the Tigers.
Brackets for the state tournament will be announced by the WIAA on Sunday.
