EDGAR – Stratford and Auburndale each had two champions and qualified a combined 11 for next week’s state tournament after competition at the WIAA Division 3 individual wrestling sectional on Saturday at Edgar High School.
Stratford sophomore Carter Lueck and senior Jackson Ormond, and Auburndale sophomore Colton Weiler and senior Sloan Welch each won sectional titles to advance to the 2023 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which will be held Feb. 23-25 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Lueck (41-6) won the 170-pound title with an 8-2 victory over Matthew Roach of Ladysmith, and Ormond (43-1) continued his dominant season with a 4-2 overtime win over Dawson Webster of Cadott in the 182-pound final for Stratford.
Weiler (50-4) and Welch (51-2) each picked up their 50th wins of the season at the sectional as they earned titles for Auburndale. Weiler defeated Dominic Leintz of Clear Lake 7-4 in the 138-pound championship, and Welch shutout Axel Tegels of Cadott 7-0 to take the 220-pound title.
Stratford had four other wrestlers qualify for state with top-three finishes. Freshman Colin Cournoyer (38-10 at 106), sophomore Trenton Cournoyer (40-7 at 120) and junior Kaleb Krummel (31-11 at 152) each placed second, while senior Ryan Becker (39-13) was third at 145 pounds
Also qualifying for state for Auburndale were Derek Godard (46-10 at 106), Zade Grassel (37-17 at 120) and Adam Dorshorst (33-16 at 195), who each finished third.
Brackets for the state tournament will be announced on Sunday.
