MADISON – Marshfield and Auburndale both had two wrestlers reach the finals after winning semifinal matches Friday night at the 2023 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center.
Marshfield sophomore Caleb Dennee and senior Garrett Willuweit, and Auburndale sophomore Colton Weiler and senior Sloan Welch will all wrestle for state championships Saturday night.
Dennee (45-5) defeated Wisconsin Valley Conference rival T.J. Schierl (45-4) of Stevens Point, 4-2, in a 152-pound Division 1 semifinal, and Willuweit (49-6) slipped past Cayden Brandenburg (50-4) of Janesville Parker 3-1 in overtime to advance at 170 pounds for Marshfield.
Dennee will take on Jake Stoffel (43-1) of Appleton North and Willuweit will battled Charlie Milliard (51-2) of Mequon Homestead in their respective championship matches.
In Division 3, Weiler (52-4) won a major decision over Dominic Leintz (49-2) of Clear Lake, 11-1 in a 138-pound semifinal, and Welch (53-2) rolled to a 7-2 win over Vanden Hoffman (46-3) of Weyauwega-Fremont in a 220-pound semifinal.
Weiler will face Mineral Point’s Lucas Sullivan (48-4) in the D-3 138-pound final, and Welch will take on Brady Lehnherr (18-4) of La Crosse Aquinas in the 220-pound championship.
Two other Marshfield wrestlers and one from Stratford lost their semifinal matches.
Marshfeld freshman Jon Sternweis (41-13) dropped his 106-pound semifinal to Mycah Beckett (45-2) of De Pere, 5-1, and Brett Franklin (44-9) lost 10-2 to undefeated Grayson Clark (47-0) of Kaukauna in a 138-pound semifinal. Both Tigers move into the consolation semifinals and will receive a top-six state medal.
Stratford’s lone wrestler in the semifinals, Carter Lueck, lost his 170-pound match to David Malin (41-3) of La Crosse Aquinas by pin in 2:50. Lueck (42-7) moves into the consolation semifinals and is guaranteed a top-six medal.
In the girls semifinals, Marshfield sophomore Ava Gardner (20-4) lost her 100-pound match to Brooke Corrigan of De Pere, 7-5. Gardner will have Holmen’s Nora Lee (33-7) in a consolation semifinal Saturday.
Four other local boys and still alive in the consolation bracket, with a chance at third place.
Marshfield’s Hoyt Blaskowski (49-4) won both of his Division 1 145-pound consolation bracket matches on Friday, beating Kaukauna’s Connor Smith by pin in 2:49 and Kimberly’s Tanner Hart, 5-1.
Auburndale’s Derek Godard (48-11 at 106 pounds), and Stratford’s Ryan Becker (41-14 at 145) and Jackson Ormond (44-2 at 182) all won consolation matches Friday and are still alive in the Division 3 consolation bracket.
Consolation matches start at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the fifth- and third-place matches to follow. Championship matches begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Bally Sports Wisconsin.
