Marshfield baseball tops Merrill for third-straight win

MARSHFIELD – Cole Halvorsen drove in a three runs on a pair of hits to lead the Marshfield baseball team to a 5-3 victory over Merrill on Friday at Jack Hackman Field.

The game, originally scheduled for Thursday in Merrill, was moved to Marshfield. Merrill was the home team.

Carson Matis picked up the win, allowing one run in 4 1/3 innings, with Owen Griesbach picking up the save as he got the final three outs after Merrill scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to come within two runs.

Halvorsen had an RBI double in the first inning and a two-run single in the third to give Marshfield a 3-0 lead.

Merrill fought back to get within 3-2 before the Tigers put up two needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Braxton Kurth and a sacrifice fly by Griesbach.

Nathan Brzoznowski led off the seventh with a home run for Merrill and after a walk, Griesbach entered and slammed the door around a single and another walk.

Marshfield (3-0, 2-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference) returns to action Tuesday at Wausau West.
