Stratford, Spencer, Columbus Catholic all grab numerous sectional berths at WIAA Division 3 track regional

STRATFORD – The Stratford boys had four individual champions and qualified for 17 total sectional berths at a WIAA Division 3 Track & Field Regional on Monday at Tiger Stadium.

The Stratford boys earned the regional team title with 138 points, with Marshfield Columbus Catholic sixth with 47 and Spencer seventh with 44.

The Stratford girls will also be well represented at the sectional, which will be Thursday at Marathon High School, snaring eight berths as it finished fifth in the team standing with 81 points. Marathon was the regional champ with 123 points, with Columbus Catholic eighth with 29.5 and Spencer 10th with 16.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the sectional, where the top four finishers there will move on to the 2023 WIAA State Track & Field Championships at the University of La Crosse on June 2-3.

Individual champions for the Stratford boys were Jett Schoenherr in the 100 meters (11.69 seconds), Conner Weigel in the 400 (51.56), Payton Glenn in the long jump (20 feet, 4 inches) and Benjamin Zuelke in the high jump (6-0).

Weigel was also second in the triple jump (42-4¼), Schoenherr took second in the 200 (23.55), Glenn was second in the 100 (11.88), Coltan Breit was runner-up in the long jump (19-3), Koehler Kilty was second in the shot put (45-4), the 400 relay team of Glenn, Austin O’Neil, Breit and Schoenherr placed second in 44.15 seconds, and the 3,200 relay team of Cree DeFoe, Ethan Heeg, Lance Krieg and Garrett Zuelke were second in 8:37.31 for the Tigers.

Also moving on to sectionals for the Stratford boys were Brandon Knetter (third, 40-4¼) ad John Buck (fourth, 39-6) in the triple jump, Xander Curtice in the high jump (third, 5-9) and the 300 hurdles (fourth, 44.52), the 800 relay team of Zander Zawislan, O’Neil, Breit and Mason Miller (third, 1:36.41) and the 1,600 relay team of Weigel, Curtice, Krieg and Garrett Zuelke (third, 3:37.73).

Columbus Catholic had three boys and three girls qualify for sectionals in a total of nine events.

Isaac Scheer was runner-up in both the boys 3,200 (10:09.58) and 1,600 (4:36.29), his brother Andrew Scheer took third in the 1,600 (4:37.36) and fourth in the 3,200 (10:16.35), and Cal Birkhauser was third in the 800 (2:08.02) and fourth in the 400 (54.28).

All three Columbus Catholic girls that will move on qualified in field events as Aubrey Waldhauser was second in the high jump (5-0), Mira Torbey took fourth in the long jump (15-1) and Lily Stratman was fourth in the pole vault (8-3).

Spencer had three individuals grab sectional berths in four events, as well as two boys relay teams.

Autumn Davis was the only Spencer girl to move on to sectionals after placing second in the 400 in 1:04.86. Qualifying for the Spencer boys were Breckin Miller in the pole vault (third, 12-6) and 110 hurdles (third, 17.10), Kyle Nieman in the 110 hurdles (second, 16.27), and the team of Johnathon Jonas, Landon Behselich, Levi Anderson and Elliott Bauer in both the 400 relay, which they won in 44.06 seconds, and the in the 800 relay, where they were second in 1:33.73.
