Marshfield’s Minsaas, Columbus’ Scheer pick up state medals at first day of WIAA State Track & Field Championships

LA CROSSE – Marshfield senior Danielle Minsaas and Columbus Catholic sophomore Isaac Scheer picked up medals at the opening day of the 2023 WIAA State Track & Field Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Friday.

Minsaas finished sixth in the Division 1 girls high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches, and Scheer took sixth in the Division 3 boys 3,200 meters in 9:47.92 to pick up state medals. The top six in each finals event reaches the podium and is awarded a medal.

A number of local athletes and relay teams competing in preliminaries qualified for Saturday’s finals by placing in the top 10 in qualifying heats on Friday.

Stratford’s Jett Schoenherr qualified fourth in the Division 3 100 meters, running in 11.33 seconds. He failed to qualify for the finals in the 200, taking 16th in 23.37. Conner Weigel took fifth in the 400 in 51.03 to move on to the finals as well for the Tigers.

Both Spencer and Stratford qualified in the boys 400-meter relay. The Stratford team of Payton Glenn, Austin O’Neil, Coltan Breit and Schoenherr placed fourth in 44.04, and Spencer took eighth as the team of Johnathon Jonas, Landon Belselich, Levi Anderson and Elliott Bauer ran in 44.35.

Stratford’s other boys relay team, the 1,600 squad of Weigel, Xander Curtice, Lance Krieg and Garrett Zuelke, was eliminated after finishing 15th in 3:37.65.

The same four Spencer runners also qualified for finals in the 800 relay, taking eighth in 1:33.08.

Moving on to the finals for Marshfield were Michaela Dick in the 300 hurdles as she finished eighth in prelims in 46.30, and the 1,600 relay team of Ellie Jensen, Minsaas, Ella Allar and Dick, which took 10th in 4:07.59.

Marshfield’s two 300-meter boys hurdlers did not qualify for finals. Trevor Foemmel was 15th in 41.34 and Luke LeMoine was 16th in 41.63.

In Division 3 finals on Friday, Auburndale’s Lilly Hasenohrl took 14th in the girls discus with a throw of 90-6 and Stratford’s Payton Glenn finished 15th in the boys long jump (19-0.25).

Marshfield’s Aubri Brown finished 13th in the Division 1 girls shot put with a throw of 36-7½.

Minsaas failed to qualify in the girls 300 hurdles, taking 19th in 16.33, and Marshfield’s girls 800 relay team of Jensen, Gracie Ridgway, Dick and Olivia Page were 14th in 1:45.19 and were also eliminated.

Competition begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday as a number of other local athletes will also compete in finals events. The schedule has been changed due to a long rain delay during Division 1 competition Friday night, with the Division 1 track finals pushed back until after the D-2 and D-3 races are completed. All Division 1 field events will begin at their scheduled times.

For Marshfield in Division 1, Brown will take part in the girls discus, LeMoine in the boys high jump and Natalie Scharenbroch in the girls 3,200 meters.

Spencer’s Breckin Miller will compete in the Division 3 boys pole vault and Columbus Catholic’s Cal Birkhauser will run in the D-3 boys 800 meters.

Weigel will take part in the D-3 boys triple jump and the 3,200 girls relay team of Ella Heidmann, Kayla Casperson, Breleigh Skaya and Kaylie McHugh will run in the D-3 finals for Stratford.
