Columbus Catholic’s Scheer, Medford’s Richter win varsity races at Marshfield Tiger Cross Country Invitational

MARSHFIELD – Marshfield Columbus Catholic junior Isaac Scheer won the boys race and Medford’s Meredith Richter cruised to the victory in the girls race as the annual Marshfield Tiger Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday at Wildwood Park.

Scheer, who finished second at the meet last year and third as a freshman in 2021, won the boys 5,000-kilometer race in 16:49.2, 35 seconds ahead of Marshfield’s Owen Hoerneman. Stratford’s Cree DeFoe finished third in 17:31.9.

Stevens Point Pacelli won the boys team title for second year in a row, accumulating 84 points. Marathon was second with 117, Stratford took fourth with 144 and Columbus Catholic was eighth with 172. Marshfield and Spencer only had four runners and did not figure in the team standings.

Thomas Cashmer added an eighth-place finish for Marshfield (17:59.9), Nathan Scheer was ninth for Columbus Catholic (18:03.4) and Ethan Heeg took 25th (19:44.2).

The top-two finishers in the girls 5K were the same as last year as Richter won in 20:12.7, 14 seconds ahead of Rory Salveson of Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Marshfield sophomore Natalie Scharenbroch took third in 20:33.1.

Stratford had three top-10 finishers as it placed second in the team standings with 67 points behind Medford (52 points). Marshfield took third with 84, Auburndale was 10th with 247, Columbus Catholic was 12th with 314 and Spencer 13th with 378.

Kayla Casperson was fifth (21:39.2), Breleigh Skaya took seventh (21:56.7) and Samantha Mielke was ninth (22:11.1) for Stratford.

Adeline Lonsdale added a 16th-place finish in 23:09.2 and Carolina Sullenger was 18th in 23:13.4 for Marshfield.

Columbus Catholic’s top runner was Abby Wojcik, who was 44th in 25:03.9.

The top 15 varsity runners earned medals at the event.

Marshfield won the team titles in the JV boys, JV girls and middle school races, while Wausau John Muir was first in the middle school girls team standings.

Marshfield and Auburndale will compete at the Stevens Point Invitational at Standing Rock Park on Saturday.

Stratford, Spencer and Columbus Catholic will be running at the Colby Invitational on Saturday.
