MARSHFIELD – Alex Edwards scored in the third minute of action and that proved to be enough for the Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team, which rolls into sectionals for the first time since 2020 after posting a 1-0 victory over Amherst in a WIAA Division 4 regional final Saturday afternoon at Griese Park.

Edwards scored an unassisted goal just 2:57 into the game to the only goal in the contest.

Columbus Catholic (19-4-2), the top seed in its half of the Division 4 Sectional 1 bracket, will host No. 3 seed Arcadia (13-6-1) in a sectional semifinal Thursday at Griese Park at 4 p.m. Arcadia defeated La Crosse Aquinas on Saturday in a shootout 5-4 after the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Arcadia and Columbus Catholic met in sectionals for five-straight seasons between 2016-20, with Arcadia winning three of the five matches.

No. 2 seed Cumberland (14-3-3) will play at No. 1 Washburn/Bayfield (14-0-2) in the other sectional semifinal Thursday, with the winners play in a sectional final on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Arcadia.

Columbus Catholic held a 17-3 shot advantage, but the Falcons (15-8) were able to hang close as goalkeeper Alex Martin made eight saves.

Lucas Kreklau saved all three shots he saw in goal for the Dons to preserve the shutout.
