Neenah closes game on huge run to finish off Marshfield girls basketball

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls basketball team held its own with Neenah for much of the game Tuesday night. The Rockets, however, showed why they are one of the best teams in the state.

Neenah closed the game on a 25-2 run over the final 10 minutes to down the Tigers 80-48 in a nonconference matchup at the Fredrick Construction Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.

University of Connecticut recruit Allie Ziebell scored 31 points and sophomore Rowan Klesmit added 23, each putting in five points in the game-ending run for the Rockets (2-0).

Marshfield jumped out to an 11-6 lead, but Neenah made its first five 3-point attempts and long balls by Ziebell and Klesmit keyed a 13-0 run that put Neenah up 19-11. The Rockets led the rest of the way.

After a 3-pointer from Zaida Kolbeck, who had a team-high 21 points for Marshfield, ended the run, Neenah ripped off another eight points in a row.

Marshfield crawled back into it by closing the half with an 8-4 advantage, which including a 3-pointer by Ashley Grancorvitz at the buzzer, and Neenah led 39-27 at the half.

The Tigers hung around, coming as close as eight after another Grancorvitz 3-pointer, and trailed 53-44 following a steal and layup from Kolbeck with 10:35 left.

Neenah forced four turnovers on the Tigers’ next six possessions and 3-pointers from Korianna Bartman and Klesmit sparked a 21-0 run that was closed out by Ziebell’s fourth 3-pointer of the game.

Neenah finished 11-for-24 from 3-point range, held Marshfield to just 35 percent shooting overall (17-for-48) and dominated the boards with a 32-21 advantage.

Marshfield (1-1) hosts Baraboo for another nonconference game next Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 7:15 p.m.
