AUBURNDALE – The Columbus Catholic boys basketball team were back on the court for the first time in over a week and played with a purpose.

Head coach Joe Konieczny’s wife and son, Emmitt, were involved in a vehicle crash last Thursday, and the Dons postponed their game that night. The team returned to action Monday, playing without Emmitt, a senior starter, and were able to get off to a fast start on its way to a 66-55 win over Auburndale in a nonconference matchup at Auburndale High School.

The Dons held Auburndale to 18 first-half points to open up a nine-point lead, and Blake Jakobi made all eight of his free throw attempts in the second half as they were able to hold on for the win.

Jakobi made five of Columbus Catholic’s nine 3-pointers and ended up with a game-high 23 points, and Cy Becker added 22 for the Dons, who are now 3-0.

Kaden Anderson had 20 points and Caden Weinfurter chipped in 15 for Auburndale (2-1).

Columbus Catholic hosts Spencer for a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game Thursday, while Auburndale returns to action Friday with a Marawood Conference crossover at Phillips.
