CHIPPEWA FALLS – Two late goals lifted Chippewa Falls to a 3-1 win over Marshfield in a nonconference girls soccer game Friday. It was the season-opener for the Tigers.

Chippewa Falls scored early when Krista Lanbrecht sailed a shot past Marshfield goalie Kassi Todryk on a free kick following a hand ball call on the Tigers 4:09 into the game.

The rest of the first half was scoreless and Marshfield tied the game just 1:16 into the second half when Alyssa Brenner connected on a pass to Allison Gruen, who scored and knot that match at 1-1.

The game was scoreless for the next 25 minutes until the Cardinals (3-0) took the lead for good. Emily Passint scored at the 66:34 mark and Alexa Bengston added another goal with 2 minutes left.

“I was impressed with the play of the team,” Marshfield coach Steve Lindner said. “We strung passes together had some outstanding passes and crossing passes and overall played a decent game. Not that we are totally satisfied with the game as it is always good to have things to work on, and we do, but being the first game, I was pretty happy.”

Lindner said he saw a number of good things from individuals that will need to step up this season for the Tigers to improve on their three-win season from a year ago.

“(Freshman) Darian Molter was able to get some nice setups and shots as she played her first varsity game,” Lindner said. “The defense played a steady game, holding a potent team to five shots, led by some good play by captains Sarah Wolff and Alyssa Brenner, and Leah Cherney.”

Marshfield kicks its season into full gear next week with six games in a five-day stretch. The Tigers open their Wisconsin Valley Conference schedule Tuesday at Wausau West. Marshfield also plays at Wausau East on Thursday, hosts Medford in its home opener April 15, and will play three games at the Wausau West Invitational on April 16.
