A number of former local high school athletes have moved on to the next level and are playing sports collegiately across the country.

Periodically, MarshfieldAreaSports.com will publish a College Sports Roundup updating readers of those local athletes’ exploits at the collegiate level.

McCann, Goeppinger shines for University of Northwestern soccer
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Matt McCann, a 2014 graduate of Marshfield High School, started 20 of 21 games this season for the University of Northwestern men’s soccer team, an NCAA Division III school that plays in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

McCann led the Eagles in scoring with 17 points (seven goals, three assists) as a midfielder. Northwestern finished 7-12-2 overall and 6-5-2 in the UMAC, losing in the first round of the conference playoffs.

He was named to first-team all-conference in the UMAC and was named the conference’s Rookie of the Year.

Emily Goeppinger, also a 2014 Marshfield graduate, was freshman on the women’s soccer team at UN this season. She had three goals and an assist in 15 games (14 starts) for the Eagles.

Goeppinger was an honorable mention all-conference selection for Northwestern.

The Northwestern women’s team was 6-13 overall and 6-8 in the UMAC.

Molter makes mark for Winona State soccer
WINONA, Minn. – Darian Molter, a 2014 graduate of Marshfield High School, played in all 23 games this season a freshman on the Winona State university women’s soccer team.

Molter made four starts this season and finished with six goals and an assist for the Warriors.

She totaled 22 shots on goal and converted one of two penalty kicks.

Molter scored twice in victories over Emporia State (Kan.) on Sept. 14 and Sioux Falls (S.D.) on Oct. 18.

Winona State finished the season with a 15-6-2 record, 10-4-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Warriors lost to undefeated Minnesota State-Mankato 2-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division II regional tournament on Sunday to end their season.

Johnson contributes for UW-La Crosse volleyball
LA CROSSE – Danica Johnson, a 2012 Spencer High School graduate, was a key backcourt player for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women’s volleyball team this fall.

Johnson, a junior was fifth on the team with 173 digs this season, and added 27 assists, 17 service aces and one kill for the Eagles.

UW-La Crosse finished the season 9-18 overall and 1-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Voss, UWGB cross country wraps up season
GREEN BAY – Rebecca Voss, a 2014 Marshfield High School grad, recently completed her freshman season on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women’s cross country team.

Voss placed 46th (23:49) at the Horizon League Championship Meet on Nov. 1 at the Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course in Kenosha. She was third for the Phoenix, who placed eighth out of nine teams.

Voss wrapped up her freshman season with a 173rd-place finish (23:28), second for the Phoenix, at the 2014 NCAA Division I Great Lakes Regional Meet on Nov. 14 at Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course in Verona. The meet was hosted by the University of Wisconsin. UWGB was 30th out of 32 teams. Michigan State won the event, with Wisconsin second.

Stargardt, Kundinger playing well for UW-Stevens Point volleyball
STEVENS POINT – Tiffany Stargardt, a 2013 Marshfield High School graduate, and Kendra Kundinger, an Auburndale High School grad in 2014, are both key members of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point women’s volleyball team that is competing in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Stargardt has 231 kills in 31 matches this season, which ranks fifth among the Pointers. She also has 19 assists, 18 service aces and 260 digs, which is also fifth on the team.

Kundinger has played in 24 matches, totaling 18 service aces, 33 digs and six assists.

UW-Stevens Point is 32-4 overall and finished 7-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pointers won three matches at the NCAA Division III regional last weekend at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minn., beating College of Saint Benedict (Minn.), Coe College (Iowa) and Cornell (Iowa).

The Pointers will play in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals beginning Friday at Newport News, Va., against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College of Claremont, Calif., at 11:30 a.m. The Final Four will be played Saturday, with the championship match Sunday.
