Marshfield girls basketball rallies late, but falls short to Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT – Marshfield came back from a seven-point deficit in the final minute but Stevens Point made four free throws in the final 22 seconds to top the Tigers 63-62 in a wild Wisconsin Valley Conference girls basketball game Friday night at Stevens Point Area Senior High.

Marshfield trailed 59-54 after a basket by Ema Fehrenbach with 1 minute to go.

The Tigers rallied with five more points following a pair of SPASH turnovers. Ellie Kummer hit a 3-pointer to knot the score at 59-59.

On the inbounds pass, Marshfield was called for a foul and Abby Bohanski made two free throws to put the Panthers back on top.

After a missed shot by the Tigers, Stevens Point scored two more at the free throw line to open up a four-point lead.

Kummer hit another 3-pointer with 1 second to go but it was too late for Marshfield, which drops to 13-5 overall and 5-3 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. SPASH is now 9-10 and 5-4 in the conference.

Caitlin Michaelis passed the 1,100-point mark in her career at Marshfield with a team-high 18 points. McKayla Scheuer added 16 points for the Tigers.

The Tigers’ next game is Tuesday at home against Wisconsin Rapids as part of a girls-boys doubleheader. The girls game starts at 6 p.m. with the boys game to follow at 7:45 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.
