Marshfield’s Michalski shoots second-round 80, ties for 57th at WIAA State Boys Golf Championships

VERONA – Marshfield senior Derek Michalski wrapped up his Tigers’ career at the 2017 WIAA State Boys Golf Championships on Tuesday, shooting an 8-over par 80 at University Ridge Golf Club.

Michalski shot an 84 on the opening day Monday, and was tied for 61st place entering the second round. He moved up four spots to a four-way tie for 57th in the Division 1 field with a 164 total.

Hartland Arrowhead freshman Piercen Hunt won the individual title in Division 1 at 3-under par after shooting a 69 on Tuesday. He won by five shots over Jed Baranzyk of Bay Port.

Other area golfers competing included Wausau West’s Josh Yang, who tied for eighth with a 152, and Wausau East’s Matt Tuman, who tied for 19th with a 155.

Michalski, who will play golf collegiately at NCAA Division II University of Sioux Falls, did one shot better in each round at state than a year ago, when he shot 85-81 and finished in an eight-way tie for 75th.

Hartland Arrowhead (Division 1), Madison Edgewood (Division 2), and Fond du Lac St. Mary’s Springs (Division 3) won the state team titles.

New Berlin West’s Hunter Pipik won the Division 2 individual title with a 141 after shooting a 5-under par 67 on Tuesday.

Mathew Higley of Eleva-Strum won the Division 3 individual title with a two-day total of 150.
