RIVER FALLS – The Marshfield boys soccer team had more shots and held its own for much of the game, but came up short, dropping a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal to River Falls 3-1 on Thursday.

Marshfield outshot River Falls 12-10, but didn’t convert during the final 79 minutes of the game.

River Falls scored at the 10:29 mark only to see Marshfield’s Kyle Tremmeling respond 13 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1.

Devin Laidlaw put River Falls (5-9-2) back on top 6 minutes later, and Joshua Linton finished off the scoring with a goal with 4:24 remaining in the game for the Wildcats.

Marshfield finishes its season with a 4-14-1 record. River Falls moves on to a regional final Saturday at Holmen (16-2-4).

“The boys played well,” Marshfield coach Steve McCann said. “We had our chances. I liked how we played in the middle. The midfielders had a great game. Often when that’s the case, you win the game.”
