MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield wrestling team improved to 3-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference with a 52-18 victory over Merrill on Friday night at Marshfield High School

Prior to the varsity meet, former Marshfield High School wrestler Tyler Manthe was honored by the Tigers. Manthe, 21, died in an automobile crash in August. A scholarship and donation for equipment was made to the Marshfield wrestling club by Manthe’s mother, Gidget, and her husband, Cory Tobin.

“I knew when our guys stepped out on the mat they were fighting for more than a win,” Marshfield coach Jackson Hein said. “There is much more to wrestling than what meets the eye. It brings people together. It’s about family and helping each other out. It’s about creating new memories as well as teaching us all how to deal with adversity. I’m really proud of how we competed tonight as a team, but even more proud of who we competed for. There is a reason why ‘family’ is one of Marshfield’s core values, it is the backbone to our wrestling program and the Marshfield community.”

The Tigers are tied with D.C. Everest for first place in the conference and wrestles at Everest next Thursday.

Caden Dennee (120 pounds), Tanner Kanable (126), Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (170), Sam Mitchell (195), and Alex Brost (220) won by pin for the Tigers. All but Schwanebeck-Ostermann’s came in the first period of their respective matches.

Spencer Wirthlin added a technical fall victory at 132, Caden Pearce (138) and Nolan Hertel (145) won by major decision, Payton Young (152) won by decision, and Gabe Pugh (113) won by forfeit for Marshfield.
