WAUSAU – Despite a valiant effort from Wausau East, the Marshfield boys basketball team found another way to pull out a road win.

Junior guard Brooks Hinson calmly nailed a 15-foot jump shot with 2 seconds to go to lift the Tigers to a 65-63 victory in Wisconsin Valley Conference action Friday night at Wausau East High School.

The win is Marshfield’s 13th in a row and third conference victory on the road this week as it improves to 18-1 overall and a perfect 9-0 in the WVC. Wausau East falls to 13-4 and 5-3 in conference play. Click here to view the Wisconsin Valley Conference boys basketball standings

The lead changed six times in the final six minutes.

Chris Pohl connected on two of his five 3-pointers to turn a two-point deficit into a 58-54 lead for the Tigers with 5:25 to go.

Jaydan Garrett made a 3-pointer for East before Hinson scored on a layup. After a basket by Caden Werth for East, Hinson scored again and Marshfield led 62-61 with 2:25 to go.

Hinson pushed the Tigers’ lead to two with a free throw with 43 seconds left before Wausau East tied it on two free throws by Jesse Napgezek with 28 seconds to go.

Marshfield ran down the clock and called timeout with seven seconds left. Pohl caught the inbounds pass at the top of the key and handed to a racing Hinson, who drove down the left side and slipped, but kept his dribble alive, stood up and swished the jump shot with less than 2 seconds to go.

East called timeout with 1.6 seconds left and a long inbounds pass led to a one-handed heave at the buzzer that missed, sealing the victory for Marshfield.

Pohl finished with a game-high 28 points on 11-for-16 shooting, and Hinson added 20 points, 16 coming in the second half for the Tigers.

Napgezek and Charlie Cayley each had 15 points, and Garrett and Werth both had 11 for the Lumberjacks.

Marshfield will play a nonconference game at Eau Claire North on Tuesday.
