WESTON – The Marshfield wrestling team is heading back to team sectionals after winning the team title at a WIAA Division 1 Wrestling Regional on Saturday at D.C. Everest High School.
Marshfield finished with 273 points, with D.C. Everest second with 227 and both advance to the Division 1 team sectional at Menomonie on Tuesday. Marshfield will face Hudson in one semifinal at the team sectional, with Menomonie taking on D.C. Everest in the other. The winners will face each other in another dual meet, with the victor earning a spot in the 2024 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament, which will be held March 1-2 at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison. Marshfield was the runner-up at the state team tournament last year.
Marshfield will have 13 of its 14 wrestlers move on to the D-1 individual sectional, which will host next Saturday, Feb. 17. The top four finishers at the regional move on to the individual sectional, with the top two finishers in each weight class at the sectional qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which will be at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 22-24.
The Tigers won eight of the 14 weight classes and were second in two others.
Carter Willequette (106 pounds), Todd Gurney (113), Jon Sternweis (120), Grayden Rode (157), Caleb Dennee (157), Owen Griesbach (175), Mason Seidl (190) and James Clements (215) all won regional titles for Marshfield.
Easton Ledden (132) and Jace Kelnhofer (138) placed second, Brok Carolfi was third at 285, and Kashton Kilty (126) and Dalton Hagen (150) both finished fourth for Marshfield to also earn spots at sectionals.
