HUDSON – Marshfield senior Alik Martin will be making a return trip to the state meet after placing second in the diving competition at a WIAA Division 1 Boys Swimming & Diving Sectional on Saturday at Hudson High School.

Martin finished with a score of 412.75, finishing second behind sectional champion Isaac McKenzie of Hudson (418.10) to qualify for a second-straight trip to state. The 2024 WIAA State Boys Swimming & Diving Championships for Division 1 will be held next Saturday, Feb. 17, at Waukesha South High School.

Martin was the lone state qualifier for Marshfield, which finished fifth in the team standings with 241 points.

Marshfield junior Simon Dagit missed out on qualifying for state in two individual events and on a relay by less than one-quarter of a second in each.

Dagit finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.28 seconds, 0.07 of a second shy of the final state meet qualifying spot, and was also fourth in the 100 butterfly in 53.14 seconds, coming up 0.09 of a second short of a state berth.

The Tigers’ 200 freestyle relay team of Dagit, Kevin Buth, Carson Klumb and Henry Hilbelink also came up just short, finishing third in 1:32.07. The final state berth had a time of 1:31.83.

Marshfield’s 200 free relay team and Dagit in the 100 butterfly both broke their own school records.

Marshfield also had a fourth-place finish from the 400 freestyle relay team of Ryan Grassman, Zach Kayhart, Klumb and Hilbelink swam in 3:30.95.

Each event champion as well as the next 18 best finishers (not including the sectional champs) statewide in the six sectional meets, earn bids for the state meet.
