Marshfield boys basketball pulls out overtime win over Wausau West

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys basketball team had already clinched the Wisconsin Valley Conference championship heading into Friday’s home game against Wausau West, but still had a chance to finish off the year with an undefeated mark in conference play.

The Tigers were taken to the limit, fighting back from a four-point halftime deficit, and defeated Wausau West in overtime 48-40 at the Fredrick Construction Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.

Marshfield outscored the Warriors 10-2 in the overtime period to pull off the win and improve to 21-2 overall and 11-0 in the WVC.

Brooks Hinson accounted for half of the Tigers’ points, hitting five 3-pointers and scoring 24 points in the win. Chris Pohl added 11 points and nine rebounds.

Marshfield shot just 40 percent from the field, but held Wausau West to 24 percent (13-for-53).

Bennett Matteson had 14 points to lead West (14-9, 5-7 WVC).

Marshfield will finish its regular season with a conference game at Merrill on Thursday.

The WIAA will announce postseason brackets on Sunday. Marshfield will open with a Division 1 regional semifinal on Friday, March 1.
