EDGAR – Eight Stratford wrestlers and four from Auburndale are moving on to state after top-three finishes at a WIAA Division 3 individual wrestling sectional Saturday at Edgar High School.
The top three finishers in each of the 14 weight classes qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, which will be held Feb. 22-24 at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Stratford had two sectional champions and Auburndale had one as the two Marawood rivals combined for 12 state tournament berths.
Stratford’s Trenton Cournoyer (41-8) won the 120-pound championship, defeating Cale Quaintance of Marathon 7-1, and Carter Lueck (49-1) earned the 175-pound title with a pin in 5:23 of Brock Naessen of Shell Lake.
Auburndale’s Colton Weiler (49-1) won the 144-pound final, pinning Briar Naglosky of Shell Lake in 1:17.
Also moving on to state for Stratford were runner-ups Colin Cournoyer (39-9) at 113 pounds and Noah Lucio (38-7) at 190, and third-place finishers Roman Schmidt (31-12) at 106, Aaron Knetter (34-14) at 126, Mathias Kaiser (31-12) at 132, and Kaleb Krummel (34-11) at 150.
Auburndale’s Zade Grassel (41-10) finished second at 126 pounds, Derek Godard (47-5) took third at 113, and Wyatt Malsin (36-14) placed third at 157 to earn spots at state.
Division 3 preliminaries will be held Thursday night at the Kohl Center.
