Marshfield’s Hinson named WVC boys basketball Player of the Year; Pohl also named to first team

Marshfield junior guard Brooks Hinson and sophomore forward Chris Pohl were both unanimous first-team picks on the 2023-24 All-Wisconsin Valley Conference Boys Basketball Team, as voted on by the seven conference coaches following the season.

Hinson was named the WVC Player of the Year as he led the Tigers in scoring at 16.8 points per game, in 3-pointers with 57, and in free throw percentage at 82.1 percent.

Pohl averaged 14.6 points per game with 50 3-pointers, and led Marshfield in rebounding at 6.5 per contest.

All five players on the first team were unanimous selections. Joining Hinson and Pohl were Stevens Point’s Grant Chandonais and Carter Combs, and Wausau East’s Jesse Napgezek.

Chandonais averaged 16 points and six rebounds per game, while Combs led the conference in assists at 7.3 per game while averaging eight points and 4.9 assists a game for Stevens Point.

Napgezek led the WVC in scoring at 17.8 points per game in conference play (18.7 overall) while shooting 58.9 percent from the field for Wausau East.

Marshfield junior Landon Lee was a second-team selection and senior forward Brant Freis was an honorable mention choice.

Lee averaged 11.9 points and a team-best 5.8 assists per game, while Freis was one of the top defenders for the Tigers, contributing 21 steals and four points per game.

Marshfield’s Chris Fischer was named Coach of the Year as the Tigers won their third-straight WVC championship.
