Spencer girls basketball team beats Greenwood to cruise into WIAA Division 4 regional finals

SPENCER – The Spencer girls basketball team will play its biggest game in years on Saturday after beating Cloverbelt Conference rival Greenwood 42-32 in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal Friday night at Spencer High School.

The Rockets won their 11th straight game to improve to 20-3 and advance to a regional final at 7 p.m. Saturday against Prentice (22-1) at Marathon High School. Prentice, the Marawood Conference South Division champion, beat Marshfield Columbus Catholic 50-34 in a regional semifinal on Friday.

Kyleigh Hebert led the way for Spencer with 11 points on 5 of 8 shooting. She added five steals and four assists for the Rockets, who shot 50 percent (17 of 34) from the field to overcome a rough 8-for-18 performance from the free-throw line.

Courtney Schulz added nine points and Tara Matter added six points and 11 rebounds for Spencer.

The Rockets led 21-11 at halftime and finished off the win with a 17-12 fourth quarter after the Indians (15-9) cut it to five.

Kelsey Kirn had eight points to lead Greenwood.
