PRENTICE – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic girls basketball team hung in there with one of the top teams in the state, Prentice, during the second half. The problem was the Dons fell behind by too much in the first half.

Prentice jumped out to a 13-3 lead after the first quarter and a 26-9 advantage by halftime on its way to a 50-34 win over Columbus Catholic in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal Friday night at Prentice High School.

The Buccaneers (22-1) will face Spencer (20-3) in a regional final at 7 p.m. Friday at Marathon High School. Columbus Catholic’s season ends with an 8-14 record.

Cassie Hallstrand scored nine of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter as Prentice built a 10-point lead as it held the Dons without a field goal.

Columbus outscored Prentice 25-24 in the second half as Elizabeth Manlick poured in 10 of her team-high 12 points and the Dons made three 3-pointers. Hailey Niemi scored all 10 of her points for Prentice in the second half to keep Columbus at bay.
