Columbus Catholic baseball team whips Augusta in doubleheader sweep

AUGUSTA – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic bats came alive Monday as the Dons pounded out 30 hits in a pair of games and swept a Cloverbelt Conference East Division doubleheader from Augusta 16-5 and 10-5.

The wins improve the Dons’ record to 4-11 overall and in the Cloverbelt East. Augusta falls to 7-10, 7-8 in conference play.

Columbus scored four times in the first inning of Game 1 to set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.

Columbus scored in five of the six innings of the opener, adding nine runs over the final two innings. The game was called after six due to the 10-run rule.

Paul Selz was 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Dons. Matt Iwanski picked up the win, striking out four.

In Game 2, Columbus busted open a 3-2 game with four runs in the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth to win going away.

Bryce DeSmet was 3-for-4 and Brandon Nikolai went 2-for-4 with a double for the Dons. DeSmet also earned the win, pitching a complete game.

Columbus Catholic hosts Spencer on Tuesday.
